Will Owatonna Be Named The Best Town?
Owatonna is officially one of five finalists for the inaugural Best Minnesota Town competition run by Minnesota Monthly.
The competition started several months ago when communities all across Minnesota were invited to submit a lengthy application explaining how their town embodies the “spirit of Minnesota”. The Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism submitted an application along with more than 30 other communities around the state.
The editorial staff at Minnesota Monthly reviewed the applications and narrowed the group down to ten towns. The towns were then subject to a public voting period which lasted one month and accounted for twenty-five percent of the overall scoring (the rest of the scoring was based on the application). In order to remind people to vote every day, the chamber launched a social media campaign on their Visit Owatonna Facebook and Instagram pages. Quotes from locals talking about why they love Owatonna were posted on a daily basis.
“Owatonna completely blew away the other candidates in the public voting period, by a margin of 20,000 votes,” says Katie Godfrey, director of conventions and tourism at the chamber. “We are excited to discover the results of the contest. We would be honored if Owatonna were named the Best Minnesota Town.”
The final stage in the process takes place on November 30 when the winning town will be announced at a party for the finalists in downtown Minneapolis. The winning town will receive a multi-page editorial feature in the Minnesota Monthly magazine, a media campaign valued at more than $50,000, a Governor’s Proclamation, and more. Owatonna is competing against Bemidji, Austin, Waconia and Walker, Minnesota.
The Best Minnesota Town contest is produced by Minnesota Monthly and presented by Old Dutch.
